FAQ

Frequently asked questions

generalWhat is ORDNIX?

A theater-scale real-time strategy wargame: you command one front of World War 3, from a 1v1 duel on a 2.7 km front to a 100v100 war on a 6+ km theater. It runs on a deterministic simulation where every shell, radio link and soldier is simulated, so what you see is what happened.

buyingWhen does it release?

No date has been announced. ORDNIX is coming to Steam in Early Access. Wishlisting it on Steam is the easiest way to hear the moment it's out.

buyingHow much will it cost?

The price hasn't been announced yet.

buyingWhat about refunds?

Purchases, payment and refunds are handled by Steam under the Steam Refund Policy (EULA section 10).

buyingWhat does Early Access mean here?

The core is playable: the deterministic simulation, ranked lockstep multiplayer, replays, seasons, eight nations and theater battles up to 100v100. Early Access is where the war grows: more maps, audio and music, campaigns and Steam leaderboards. Your after-action reports shape what gets built next.

technicalWhich platforms is it on?

Windows PC through Steam (Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit). Controller and touch input are supported, but the game isn't Steam Deck Verified yet.

gameplayCan I play alone?

Yes. SKIRMISH puts you against AI commanders at any size from a duel to 100v100, on every map, with every nation, victory condition and weather. DUEL PRACTICE is a ranked map, alone against the machine. Campaigns are planned during Early Access.

gameplayWhich nations are in the game?

Eight: US, UK, Canada, Turkey, Russia, China, South Korea and North Korea, with real rosters and real gaps. Canada fields no MLRS, the UK's deterrent rides the boats, North Korea brings mass and the arsenal. Each nation has 56 unit types across land, sea, air, drones and the strategic tier.

gameplayHow do you win a battle?

Five victory conditions: Conquest, Destruction, CTF, King of the Hill and Annihilation, across a 15-map, 4-biome pool.

gameplayAre there nuclear weapons?

Tactical nuclear release is in, with real counterplay. Authorize a release and both sides get the launch warning: scatter, intercept the bomber, or break the attacker's command link and scrub it.

gameplayAre there replays?

Every battle records itself in the BATTLE ARCHIVE. Re-fight any war at up to x1000, from your fog or the enemy's. A replay stores the orders and re-fights the whole battle shell for shell: it is the match, not a recording of it.

multiplayerHow does multiplayer work?

Quick Match pairs you with other commanders at the team size you choose. The ranked ladder is one 6v6 Conquest queue of twelve human commanders. Custom lobbies are whoever you invite, and AI commanders fight any empty side.

multiplayerAre there dedicated servers?

No. One player hosts and the others join through Steam: no middleman and no shutdown date. Everyone runs the same deterministic simulation and only orders cross the wire.

multiplayerHow do I play with a friend?

The host opens MULTIPLAYER and presses HOST FOR FRIENDS under WAR ROOM HOSTING. The friend, with ORDNIX already running, picks the host in the Steam friends list and chooses Join Game. Then create a custom lobby and share its code, or queue a 1v1 Quick Match together. Full multiplayer guide.

multiplayerWhat happens if I disconnect?

The war never freezes. The moment a seat goes silent, an AI regent at that commander's own rank takes the army and fights on. The seat stays yours for the whole match, and RECONNECT hands it straight back.

multiplayerCan I play online with a Family Shared copy?

No. Online play checks that each player's own Steam account owns the game. A shared copy is refused with “Steam could not verify this account and game ownership.” Skirmish still works.

rankedWhen does ranked unlock?

At 250 lifetime rated XP. The first Quick win of any day pays exactly that. Any account with a prior ranked game is always through.

rankedWhy does ranked ask about Secure Boot and TPM?

To keep the ladder fair, ranked requires every member's Windows platform security to be on: Secure Boot, TPM, Memory Integrity and Kernel DMA Protection. Quick Match and custom lobbies don't need them. SteamOS/Proton may not report these checks, so ranked may be unavailable there. Run the eligibility checker.

rankedHow do tiers and seasons work?

Seven tiers on published MMR floors: IRON, BRONZE (900), SILVER (1000), GOLD (1100), PLATINUM (1200), DIAMOND (1350) and WARLORD (1500). Your first ten rated games move at double weight. Seasons run eight weeks; at the roll your rating drifts halfway back toward 1000, while your record, all-time peak and every cosmetic you earned survive.

rankedHow is cheating handled?

Ranked runs on deterministic lockstep. A full simulation-state hash from every client is compared every two seconds; if clients disagree, the match is void and no rating moves. Only orders cross the wire, never positions, health or outcomes, and you can only be matched against an identical build.

technicalWhat are the system requirements?

Minimum: Windows 10 64-bit, a quad-core ~3 GHz CPU, 8 GB RAM and a Vulkan 1.2 or DirectX 12 GPU with 2 GB VRAM (GTX 960 / RX 470). Recommended: 6 cores, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1660 / RX 5600 XT or better. An SSD is recommended. Full table.

technicalHow are graphics settings chosen?

A fresh install measures your PC during its first battle and picks the graphics tier from the next battle on, spending any headroom: supersampling on strong hardware, reconstructing up on weaker hardware. A choice you make yourself always wins: OPTIONS → GRAPHICS QUALITY.

technicalDoes it support controllers and Steam Deck?

Controller and touch input are supported. The game isn't Steam Deck Verified yet, and ranked may be unavailable on SteamOS because its Windows security checks may not be reported there.

technicalWhat accessibility options are there?

In OPTIONS: REDUCED FLASH for photosensitivity (on by default), UI SCALE for the size of the interface, and MASTER VOLUME.

technicalThe game won't start. What can I check?

ORDNIX refuses to start while Windows is in Test Mode (test-signing) or a kernel debugger is attached. Also update your graphics driver (Vulkan 1.2 / DirectX 12) and use Steam's Verify integrity of game files. More fixes.

generalDoes ORDNIX collect my data?

In the Privacy Policy's own words: the game has no developer server, no account database, no advertising, no analytics and no sale of data; online play sends a small set of game records to the player who hosts your match, and offline play sends nothing anywhere. Privacy Policy.

contentWas AI used to make ORDNIX?

ORDNIX was made with AI coding tools: AI coding assistants wrote the game's program code, its parameter files and its written text under the developer's direction, and the developer reviewed, tested and decided what shipped. The game contains no AI-generated media: no machine-learning model generated any image, sound or music; every image is rendered by the game's own procedural code and every sound is synthesized by the game's own code. The same disclosure is on the Steam page.

contentIs the footage real?

Yes. All footage and screenshots are real in-engine captures from the game.

contentIs it suitable for younger players?

ORDNIX depicts graphic violence and is intended for adults. See the Content Disclaimer.

contentCan I stream it or make videos?

Yes, including on monetized channels, as long as you don't present your content as endorsed by the developer, don't sell the game's assets on their own, and don't use it to promote cheating or harass others (EULA section 8).

contentIs there a photosensitivity option?

Yes. REDUCED FLASH is ON by default in OPTIONS. Please read the Health and Safety Warning before playing.

generalHow do I report a bug or get help?

Post in the ORDNIX Steam Community discussions, the support channel named in the game's EULA. Security researchers: see security.txt.

Getting started

From first launch to first battle

  1. Get it on Steam. ORDNIX is coming to Steam in Early Access; wishlist it to hear when it's out. Keep Steam running for online play.
  2. First launch. A short ORDNIX title card, then ORDNIX — BEFORE YOU PLAY. Read the notices and press ACCEPT ALL & CONTINUE.
  3. Your first battle: SKIRMISH from the main menu, against AI commanders at any size, or DUEL PRACTICE in MULTIPLAYER.
  4. Your call sign: set it in MULTIPLAYER and press SAVE CALL SIGN.
  5. Graphics are automatic: your first battle measures the PC and the right tier applies from the next. Take over any time in OPTIONS → GRAPHICS QUALITY.
  6. Photosensitivity: REDUCED FLASH is ON by default in OPTIONS. Please read the Health and Safety Warning.
Multiplayer guide

Play with friends

No dedicated servers: one player hosts and friends join through Steam. Every player needs their own copy, Steam running and the same game build.

Host and join

  1. Everyone: launch ORDNIX and accept BEFORE YOU PLAY.
  2. Host: MULTIPLAYER → in OPERATIONS, expand [+] WAR ROOM HOSTING → HOST FOR FRIENDS.
  3. Guests, with ORDNIX already running: open the Steam friends list, right-click the host and choose Join Game.

Then pick a fight

  1. Custom lobby: the host expands [+] CUSTOM GAME → CREATE LOBBY and shares the 5-character CODE. Guests expand [+] CUSTOM GAME, enter the code and press JOIN. The host presses START OPERATION; AI commanders fight any empty side.
  2. Quick Match: choose your team size (1v1 for two friends), press QUICK MATCH, then ACCEPT when the match is found.
  3. Ranked 6v6: twelve human commanders who each pass the eligibility checks.
Tip: start ORDNIX before you choose Join Game. If nothing happens, check that the game is running and choose Join Game again.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

The game won't start

Check that Windows isn't in Test Mode and no kernel debugger is attached; ORDNIX refuses to start in either state. Update your graphics driver (the game needs Vulkan 1.2 or DirectX 12), then use Steam → ORDNIX → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.

Low frame rate

A fresh install measures your PC in its first battle and picks the tier from the next battle on. If it's still slow, choose a lower tier in OPTIONS → GRAPHICS QUALITY and close other GPU-heavy apps.

My friend can't join

Both players need Steam running, their own copy of ORDNIX and the same game build (let Steam update both). Start ORDNIX first, then choose Join Game on the host in your Steam friends list. If nothing happens, check that ORDNIX is running and choose Join Game again.

“Steam could not verify this account and game ownership”

Online play needs each player's own Steam account to own the game, so Family Shared copies are refused online. Skirmish still works.

I can't queue for ranked

Ranked needs 250 rated XP (or any prior ranked game), full Windows platform security on your PC (see the eligibility checker) and twelve human commanders in the queue.
